Rustic & Rowdy: The Boric Family Bonus Room

Posted by Cassie Venable on

BlessedBoyMomof4 is a mouthful, but it’s the perfect fit for a mom with her hands & heart full with three small children and another little one on the way. Alma is that special kind of DIYer that loves a fun project, especially one the entire family can get in on.

With her husband’s help, she was able to transform their bland bonus room into a cozy retreat for their growing family. Alma shared her install in realtime on her Instagram stories and it was great to see how quickly the process went once they began.

They started by prepping the walls: wiping them down, then vacuuming them to guarantee a clean surface. Then, they did a dry fit with the planks on the floor to decide how they wanted to stagger them.

Not only did they refinish the wall but they were able to install an electric fireplace to give it the added warmth and glow every family room deserves. This custom built fireplace install is a perfect addition to the reclaimed wood wall; creating a focal point where there was only blank space before. After clearing out the space, they measured to find where the studs were located and built out the framework for the new electric fireplace. It’s important to remember to pull any wiring or cords out prior to sticking the planks on during application if you intend to mount your television or other electronics seamlessly.

Since the surface temperature of the electric fireplace doesn’t reach above 90 degrees, our peel and stick planks are ideal for turning a basic buildout into a custom, handcrafted focal feature. Using the panels in a horizontal pattern up the sides of the fireplace feature adds visual interest while making the most of your time and product. A total win in our book!

The final result strikes the perfect balance of both rustic and contemporary. The rustic barnwood feel of our peel and stick 5” planks looks perfectly at home with the sleek fireplace and television. Combined with those tufted sofas and throw pillows, you’ve got everything you need to cuddle up with cocoa and a good movie.
